In the Philippines, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 revealed that less than 1% of students mastered complex reading tasks including establishing distinctions between fact and opinion about an unfamiliar topic in the digital environment. The findings also revealed a significant association between reading performance and the quantity and quality of navigation, but our students were found to lack navigation skills.

These results show how digital texts place different demands on students’ information processing skills. Students must be able to navigate online information, critically evaluate sources, discern credibility, and synthesize information from diverse platforms. There’s a greater need for active construction and validation of knowledge.
In response to the prevalence of digital information, there is an increasing need to integrate digital reading literacy in programs of instruction. Students are encouraged to go beyond simply consuming information and engage in activities that promote the creation, evaluation, and sharing of knowledge.
